I experienced this firsthand last week at my local shopping center. I was hurrying toward the escalator that led to the car park when something strange caught my attention. It appeared to be a small, fluffy, yellow snake jumping out of a plastic cup and onto a man’s hand. Once on his hand the fluffy snake circled his wrists then slipped through his fingers before landing back in the cup. How strange, I thought. I approached the desk behind which the man stood.

I looked closely to discover the secret to the trick. But could see nothing that gave the trick away. I asked the man how it was done. To which he replied. “I click my fingers and the ‘magic worm’ jumps from the cup to my hand, slides over my wrist, through my fingers and back into the cup!” “I can see that”, I responded, “but how?” “I click my fingers,” repeated the man, “and the ‘magic worm’ jumps from the cup to my hand, slides over my wrist, through my fingers and back into the cup.”

By this time my curiosity got the better of me. I had to know the real secret. So I handed over my 10 bucks and bought my own worm. It turns out there’s nothing magic about it at all. Nothing magic about the worm, anyway.

But there is a copywriting, selling and marketing lesson here. It’s this: Get your prospect so curious about some element of your product that they have to buy it to satisfy their curiosity. Curiosity, not the worm, is the real magician’s trick that helps you sell more products. And the more you use this “copywriting trick” in your promotions the more you will sell.
